As far as I can tell it is historically accurate. It also describes how settlers in Gonzales, Goliad and San Antonio reacted to the near certainty of having to fight to the death for freedom. ![]() Some of the interesting points from Lucinda’s view are the daily life of a family of settlers in south Texas when that territory had just become a part of Mexico also the difficulty of starting a new life in the West for pioneers coming from other areas, the constant fear of Comanches and Santa Ana’s army, the unruly behavior of the Tennessee Volunteers, the difficulty of planting and harvesting every year and the political uncertainty of living in a country not yet a country. “A Line in the Sand: The Alamo Diary of Lucinda Lawrence” by Sherry Garland is a fictional epistolary record of events leading up to, during and after the battle of the Alamo in 1836, Lucinda records in her personal diary her feelings about her family, her friends, the events taking place in the fall of 1835 and the spring of 1836. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The novel Stalingrad (1950), later renamed For a Just Cause (За правое дело), is based on his own experiences during the siege. For its large canvas and sweep, it reminded me of the way that Dennis Lehane stepped up in The Given Day, and Stephen King did the same with The Stand. The Power Of The Dog really hooked me into Winslow’s fiction. The other 25 territories are in the works. In addition to the Knopf deal, Winslow’s lit agency The Story Factory has made seven-figures in deals for Germany (Droemer), Italy (Einaudi), Japan (Kadekowa), France (Seuill) and the UK (William Heinemann). The second book will be shopped to studios and filmmakers shortly. The sequel will be the first book published under the new deal, and he will follow with a four-quadrant action thriller that marks a departure for Winslow. The book, called The Power Of The Dog Part II, is being edited by Knopf chairman/editor-in-chief Sonny Mehta, and it will be released in late 2015, ahead of the film adaptation of The Power Of The Dog. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is done tactfully and with great care, with a powerful storyline and characters, making for a lovely combination. The fairy tales explored in the narrative are oldtime classics we all know and love with an added new spin, highlighting different but important lessons. This misappropriation of the term “emergent” by AI researchers and boosters deploys language from biology and physics to imply that these programs are uncovering new scientific principles adjacent to basic questions about consciousness - that AIs are showing signs of life. “60 Minutes,” for example, reported credulously that a Google program taught itself to speak Bengali, while the New York Times misleadingly defined “emergent behavior” in AI as language models gaining “ unexpected or unintended abilities” such as writing computer code.
